A huge weight has been taken off on seafarers' shoulder as Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) announced the new validity of Seafarer's Identification and Record Book (SIRB) is now 10 years.
The official Facebook page of MARINA's STCW department posted a photo (link here) to inform all shipping company, fishing company, manning agencies, seafarers and all concerned about the new MARINA circular no. 2016-05 that cite the amendment of the old circular no. 2009-10.
The amendment states as follows:
The affectivity date of the amendment is 29th June 2016. So from now hereon the SIRB validity should be ten (10) years from the date issued.
Signed by MAXIMO Q. MEJIA, PhD, MARINA Admimistrator.
The decision was on last minute, as there will be a new incoming MARINA Administrator in part of the new Philippine government administration under the 16th president elect Rodrigo Duterte starting on July 1, 2016.
The camp of Duterte also announced the willingness to extend the Philippine Passport validity to ten (10) years and we are looking forward to that.
It has been a long struggle to us seafarers renewing past SIRB with only 5 years validity, in which was only used to 2-4 contracts.
Aside from, we can save a chunk of money and we can conserve a great amount of resource, It is indeed a good news and a great convenience to all seafarers because we can now enjoy our vacation being with our family rather than before spending it on long lines for renewal.
What is your reaction to the new 10 year validity of Philippine Seaman's Book ? Do you think the Philippine Passport should follow immediately?
