MV Captain Ufuk, a 2,451 gross tonnage general cargo ship formerly Panama registered has been anchored in Manila Bay since 2009, being hold by the Philippine Coast Guard because of some violations according to initial reports.
The vessel was caught smuggling firearms in Mariveles, Bataan in 2009 and was reported to have yielded 14 crates of high-powered guns before it was seized off the coast.
The Captain at the time it was seized had said it came from Turkey, Georgia, Gibraltar, Ghana, Cape Town in South Africa and Penang before proceeding to Jakarta and the Philippines.
On Sunday morning July 17, the vessel caught the attention of biker, joggers and bystanders because it started to sink. Regular comers on Roxas Boulevard said it was on normal position before and just started listing on its port side past few days.
According to Vesselfinder the ship is built in 1967 with IMO number 6802216. Maybe because of its age and the time it has been there, instances of corrosion and holes may have arisen.
It was supposedly under the custody of the Bereau of Customs (BOC) and been tried to auction since 2014 because of the danger it could lead in any instances.
As of 9 am, the stern of the ship is at sink and Coast Guard authorities are still investigating the situation.
